The Iyengar method of teaching develops heightened self-awareness and concentration, and the studio atmosphere is one of attention and application, not competition. At all times the teaching is oriented towards gradual but steady progress, rather than rapid but fleeting results.
Iyengar Yoga is the best yoga for beginners, its attention to detail and step-by-step instructions has been the base for most current styles of yoga. The class incorporates props such as, straps, blocks, bolsters and blankets in order to aid in more precise postures and poses and will challenge your body and lay the foundation of all the rest of the asanas in a safe way. Level 1 Class
This class is to consolidate what you have learnt in the beginner’s course.
It builds confidence, balance, focus and stability, as well as introduces the Inversions.
It continues the continuity of the necessary foundation work done in the Beginners course.
The many asanas introduced are dynamic and challenging, building up ones stamina, strength and concentration, to achieve the goal of improving the body structure, lubricating the joints, strengthening the ligaments and muscles as well as toning the internal organs and strengthening the nerves.
Level 1 & 2 Class
Teaching is oriented towards gradual but steady progress. Emphasis is given to different groups of asanas throughout the month – one week at a time. For example, in week one standing poses are emphasised, in week two forward bends are emphasised, then backbends in week three and in the fourth week the focus is on passive chest openings and restorative poses leading the practitioner, when becoming more experienced, to pranayama (breathing).
- Sitting asanas;
- Twisting asanas;
- Forward bends;
- Back bends;
- Abdominal asanas;
- Inversions; and
- Supine asanas.
This systematic classification is based on the anatomical structure and function of the body and a sequential progression of movement which helps regulate all the systems of the body such as the digestive, respiratory, circulatory, glandular, muscular, skeletal, excretory, reproductive, lymphatic and nervous system.
Level 2 Class
At Level 2, asanas such as Inversions are held for a greater length of time. This in turn prepares one physically, psychologically and mentally for the practise of pranayama (breathing exercise).
Pranayama yields sensitivity, tolerance, freedom and openness of the mind along with discipline and moral strength.
Level 2 & 3 Class
A more advanced class for students with experience in Iyengar Yoga . It helps to maintain a strong focus and challenges the student to go deeper into their practice.
The class is also open to experienced students, teachers and teacher-trainee, who have a regular practice.
This class is of enormous benefit to a first time mature student to Iyengar Yoga.
Here the use of props plays a vital role in supporting, opening and strengthening the body.
The kids class caters for 6 to 12 year old children, run during school term.
The asanas destroy lethargy and remove fear complexes and achieve a positive effect on the mind. Students of this class will express not only the immediate health benefits but also clarity and confidence during exams.
Private classes with Simon and other teachers at SKYS are available by appointment.
Those who have injury or live with a chronic medical condition can book one-to-one with a teacher, where you will be able to focus on your unique needs. One-to-ones can also benefit those that want to further develop their practice.
