Debbie Hookway’s story – Iyengar Yoga Teacher
For as long as I can remember – I’ve always loved yoga, gymnastics, running, weight training, karate and dancing. As long as I was moving I was happy. Work for me was always physical too. I was a fully qualified motor mechanic before I had my two boys. l decided to build my own small business from home dog grooming, which has been a joy for the last 12 years.
I owned an Iyengar book for about 10 years and knew I had never been to a teacher that taught this style. I honestly thought Iyengar was only taught in India.
Struggling through some tough times I was going to the gym exercising, working hard and doing karate, beating myself up really! The struggles had got to me and my body was starting to cry out for mercy. Meditation classes did help but I needed more. Then l went to a yoga class at the gym, which l had been to many times before, but never with Paula. At the end of the class l asked her what style she was teaching, “Iyengar” she said and I knew the universe had brought me here.
I loved the attention to detail and the focus on alignment; I was hooked there and then. I continued classes at her studio for two years then she mentioned Teacher Training to me with Simon Marrocco.
In January 2015 I started training with Simon, going to Jane’s classes and workshops with senior teachers. Deepening my knowledge on philosophy, learning the eight limbs of yoga and finding that there is a way through suffering through a connection back to the self and to others. We have all that we need and want right inside of us, connecting to this through my dedication to yoga has been a blessing.
I have just completed my Level 1 and 2 Intermediate certificate in May 2019.
